From Debrecen, you can rely on trains and bus transport to travel outside of the city and reach many major cities and towns across Hungary, such as Békéscsaba, Budapest, Hajdúszoboszló, Miskolc and Nádudvar. Car rental is also a good way to explore the Hungary surrounding Debrecen, while within the city itself, public transport comprises a mixture of buses, trams and also trolleybuses.

When using the city's public transport network, bear in mind that tickets are always required and are only valid within Debrecen itself. Therefore, you will not be able to use bus tickets and passes from Budapest, since they won't be accepted.

Hungary's number two international facility after Budapest Ferihegy Airport, the busy Debrecen International Airport serves around ten different airlines, such as Air Slovakia, Hemus Air, Malév Hungarian Airlines, Nouvelair and Travel Service. Debrecen Airport is just six minutes away by car and lies close to the Mikepércsi Utca. Taxis are really the best way to travel to and from the airport, since public transport options are few and far between. This airport is amongst the most historic in the whole of Hungary and dates back to the 1930.

Many fast roads connect Debrecen with much of Hungary. Budapest can be easily reached by those choosing to rent a car, being links by motorways such as the M3 and the M35. Bear in mind that you will be required to purchase a 'vignette' sticker before being legally allowed on this motorways, and theses are to be found at most fuel stations. Actually driving in Debrecen is not usually a problem and even during the main rush hours, traffic jams are quick to clear. Whilst there are also plenty of car parks, the most central places are quite expensive.

Tram 1 is the only actual tram line within the city and is perfect for central transport, with a growing number of tourists using the trams for sightseeing, linking many of the most visited attractions. The tram lines runs in a northerly direction from the railway station, along the Piac Utca and then Kálvin Tér, before finally reaching Nagyerdei Park. Bus and trolleybus transport is available along the southerly stretch of the Petofi Tér, allowing you to travel to your destination for little outlay.

Served by around 20 different trains daily, which arrive from Budapest's Nyugati and Keleti railway stations, which travel via Szolnok and feature a journey time of around two and a half hours, which the express trains offering the quickest form of rail transport. Other Hungarian destinations best reached by rail include Eger (three hours, via Füzesabony), Miskolc (two and a half hours), Nyiregyháza (45 minutes) and Tokaj (one and a half hours). International trains even travel as far as Romania.
